WINTER CARETAKER – Temporary position

The Bidwell House Museum is seeking a winter Caretaker. The Caretaker will live in a one-bedroom apartment attached to the Museum and will perform basic day-to-day maintenance at the house throughout the winter season, approximately 10 hours a week. This work will include shoveling the walkways, emptying dehumidifiers, taking trash and recycling to the local transfer station, regular vacuuming and dusting of the museum, and other light maintenance work as needed.  The house is an historic landmark with an important collection of 18th century antiques so candidates must be dependable, conscientious and detail oriented. This unpaid position provides free housing, though utilities will be the responsibility of the Caretaker. This is an ideal position for a graduate student working on a thesis or dissertation as this is a remote location with few distractions. Experience with handling fragile artwork and knowledge of historic preservation and American decorative arts is a plus. This seasonal position will begin no later than November 1, 2018 and will last through May 2019.  There is potential to extend the position into the museum’s open season, Memorial Day through Columbus Day, when the position would transition to the Resident Head Docent. This would be a 30 hour/week position that would include a docent position in addition to the caretaker duties and would include payment for hours worked. Further discussion will be necessary with the Executive Director if this is a desired option.
